Description
This amazing stonework of a castle was built for William Gillette, actor and playwright in the early 1900s. Gillette was most famous for playing Sherlock Holmes on stage and played that role over 1,700 times. Built in Haddam CT, Gillette supervised the entire construction and had many wonderful and innovative details built in such as a water tank with fire-hoses carefully laid into the walls like artwork. Wonderful carved doors with carvings that move when the door-knob is turned. His creativity is everywhere. It's amazing that even the window frames and balconies are entirely made of stone.
